Successful Polar Bear Ride reminds us of the benefits and fun of winter riding

We had a great time at the Mayor’s Polar Bear Pedal on Saturday.  Mild temps encouraged many to get out and enjoy the ride which highlighted a newly-completed segment of the B&O Trail in Speedway.  Mayor Hogsett announced  that over the next several years, Indianapolis Department of Public Works and partners will invest over $100 million into trails and greenways across Marion County.

I know some riders feel like riding in January is just plain crazy but there are many benefits to riding outside. The Polar Bear Pedal reminded me of how much fun it is to be outside on my bike even in colder weather especially during those dark winter days when we feel trapped inside. Other benefits can include a boost in your immunity, counteraction to the effects of Seasonal Affective Disorder and a higher calorie burn to get rid of that unwanted holiday weight gain. What do you think? Take our very short survey and let us know!

Are you all in on winter riding? Here are some quick tips  from Bike Indianapolis member & Social Media Director Chris Holcomb to  make sure you are safe and comfortable:

“Have you gotten outside for your first winter ride yet this year? With the right gear, it can feel really comfortable! Here’s a list of my winter bike ride go-tos:”

1. Warm winter gloves/mittens

2. Thin hat to go under helmet

3. Face covering (I use a buff)

4. Warm winter coat/layers of clothing

5. Most importantly: lights, so you can be seen with early sunsets and cloudier skies!
